Fabric Flair – Spring

Spring has sprung, or at least, if sunny days and beautiful blooms haven’t yet arrived you for, then they soon will. Even for those of us who like the winter, the arrival of spring has an air of cheerfulness to it that few can deny, and this season has the power to inspire and enthuse us about the things we love, including cross stitch. So if your creative projects have been sat in a winter slump, now could be the time to put your hand to something new. Forget New Year’s Resolutions – now is the time to spring into action!

New Season, New Project

Now that spring has arrived, it can feel really refreshing to get started on something new. If you’ve been working on a tricky pattern and are feeling stuck with it, or perhaps are progressing slowly with something huge and you just need to take a break from, why not pick up a new cross stitch to channel the vibes of spring? It doesn’t need to be something related to the season, but just having a change of creative vision can have a restorative impact on your artistic enthusiasm. Why not start a small project on a whim? It could turn into a whole series of new projects!

Cheerful Cross Stitch

If the spring weather has put you in a good mood, why not let that resonate in your cross stitch? Spring motifs such as daffodils, bluebells, snowdrops, primroses, butterflies, bees, pastel colors, sunshine… there are plenty of sweet ideas that you can incorporate into a variety of projects. We love little stitched plaques or signs that put a smile on our face, and a spring themed design would be a perfect reminder of this new season. We love anything to do with bees, so this simple from Ardith Designs "Give Bees a Chance" is a great choice for a quick project, and this one is another beautiful option. We love this Spring Traditions Sampler by Tiny Modernist. If you like working on hoops, this Floral Basket is sure to remind you of the springtime, whatever the season.ard-015.jpg

Springtime Decorations

If you like your home to reflect the season, making some interior embellishments in spring themes is a great project to start today. This Spring Floral Sampler newly released by Sweet Wing Studio would look great on a cushion or for a wall hanging, or perhaps even on a table runner when the family are coming over for Sunday lunch. If you want to try out some simple floral designs (which could be reproduced as a border on a larger piece of work) this sampler is a great project to give you new ideas. Spring Awakening is a pattern bundle featuring snowdrops, sheep and a sweet bunny – you could customize it by using a different color palette, and by using a spring aida you can make your background really pop. See our recommendations below for the best spring aida available at Fabric Flair!

Random Acts of Cross Stitch Kindness

Most of us have heard of RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) and seen reels online of people finding treasures or being gifted unexpectedly, but how often does RAK involve cross stitch? While many taking part in RAK use knitting and crochet, there’s no reason why those who do cross stitch can’t join in! If you want to spread some joy at springtime, why not stitch some little gifts to leave around town for strangers to find, or to give to people in your neighborhood? Little bookmarks, pin keeps / pin cushions, small toys, keyrings… whatever you want to make, there’s bound to be someone who will treasure finding a handmade gift. Some people add a little note to their gift, such as ‘I’m not lost, I’m just alone, if I make you smile, please take me home… Random Acts of Kindness’. You can put your cross-stitch RAK into a little plastic bag to stop it from getting dirty until it is found, and then choose somewhere to hide it – on a shelf at the library, on the bus, in a bush at the park… anywhere where someone will happen upon it and have their day made.

Use Spring Aida

If you’re working on a spring themed project, using a sympathetic aida will elevate your project and give you more scope for leaving unstitched space that still adds to your overall project. You can browse our whole spring collection here, but we have a few favorites to highlight. Bouquet Showers is a gorgeous combination of pastel pink and yellow, not only perfect for springtime, but also if you’re stitching anything for a baby girl this year. Abstract Easter Birds is a little brighter and adds a pop of purple for a more vibrant background. If you want a dreamy aida that has a good blend of colors, Cotton Candy Clouds is a lovely array of pale pastels that would make a great backing for any springtime project. To go all out floral, we suggest Zinnia in Blush Pink which has a bold pattern but subdued colors, ready and waiting for your design to jump out.
